Keystone Offers Special Recognition to Native American Program
By Carol Regier
This quarter Keystone Treatment Center is honoring one of our specialty treatment tracks, the Native American program, and expressing thanks to our Cultural Advisor, Bill Bird.
Our Native American program began nearly 20 years ago. We formed a special Native American Advisory Committee to help inform the staff of Native American traditions and to help Keystone provide a culturally sensitive program. Our first Cultural Advisor was Roy Charette. With his help, we began having lnipi ceremonies and talking circles for our patients as well as cultural training for our staff.
Our current Cultural Advisor, Bill Bird, has broadened our staff’s awareness of Native American traditions by providing ongoing training and resources. He conducts various ceremonies for the patients and helped build an onsite sweat lodge. Bill is on the committee of the Native American Prairie Land Technology Center, which promotes training and education on the Native American culture. He is a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota Nation.
Tony Pace is our Native American Business Development representative, who has promoted our addiction treatment programs to tribes across the United States.
Keystone’s dining hall displays the flag of the various tribes represented. We are very proud of this fine program and the care it provides for our Native American patients.
