KeySolutions - Student Assistance Program

Our student assistance program is committed to the encouragement, empowerment, and education of students and families in your community.

Our student assistance program brings together school, families, students, and community members in a working partnership to educate, assist, and empower students to reach their full potential.

Traditional efforts to assist students may have emphasized problems, leaving the students as well as family members feeling defeated and overwhelmed. Our student assistance program offers assistance which focuses on individual assets and enlists the help of community resources.

Our services include:
  • classroom presentations on alcohol and other drugs, school safety/violence, health issues, and family issues for elementary, middle school and high school students
  • professional help for students seeking appropriate answers to life's difficult questions: evaluations for at-risk students to determine needed referrals, on-site assessments for chemical use, individual sessions with identified at-risk students, and development of strategies to assist students with discipline concerns
  • small groups where students often find solutions to problems by talking with other students - includes facilitated groups focusing on: eating disorders, alcohol, drugs, anger management, behavior issues, support and recovery, grief and loss, divorce, students of addicted parents
  • awareness activities that are customized for classroom size groups or the entire student body: speakers, videos, group initiative, problem solving experiences
  • faculty assistance for teachers and other staff members who may sometimes find working with students and their families challenging - we provide teacher/staff inservices and individual consultation
  • community consultation which is an emerging program in compliance with the Four Principles of Effectiveness as stated in the Federal Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act including: parent nights, parent/teacher organizations, surveys, outcome studies, and grant writing consultation

Our student assistance program also offers Natural Helper Training (also known as Peer Helper Training) as a part of the program. Natural Helper Training is designed to teach students how to identify and approach students in need of someone to talk with. Skills such as listening, and how to encourage and support others are taught. Natural Helpers are trained to refer any serious problems to their school counselor. Trainings can be from 1 to 3 days long, emphasize the "Helping Skills", and can include monthly follow-up meetings or refreshers.
