However, conflict is an important aspect of everything that we do. No conflict means no growth, not challenge, and no change. But, in order for conflict to be a positive, it must be managed appropriately. Here is how to harness the positive energy of conflict: Identify what started the conflict. What is really behind the conflict? Power, acceptance, resources and recognition are the cause of many conflicts. Often, people will appear to be in conflict about one minor issue, when there is another bigger issue at work under the surface. Determine what each party's interests are. What is really at stake? To find this out, the has to be flexibility, openness and a willingness to take risks. Ask appropriate questions to determine what the other party wants. Develop a workable plan. The best conflict resolutions allow both parties to come out as winning - or at least not one being the absolute loser. What agreement can you reach that is both beneficial and satisfying to each party? Resolving conflicts successfully requires a great deal of maturity. People must forget about just getting their own way. Concentrating on building trust and finding common goals are an integral part of effective conflict resolution. One mishandled conflict can destroy trust in no time, and it can take weeks, months or even years to recover. |
